This annual Dragon Boat Festival (DBF) is organised by the Rotary Club of Bristol Breakfast.
It is intended to offer fun while raising funds for charity. The Festival is held at Baltic Wharf in the Bristol City Harbourside between the Cottage Inn and the Bristol Marina.
Each year a headline charity is chosen which receives most of the monies raised. In 2018 the headline charity is Caring in Bristol, helping homeless people 365 days a year.
The 17th DBF was held on Sunday the 10th June 2018 to raise money for Caring in Bristol and other Rotary Charities. The winners were a team from Avon Fire & Rescue dressed as Commandos. This was their secound victory, having romped home in 2017, as well!
The DBF, is a full day’s event with up to 36 teams competing in heats, semi-finals and a grand final. The fund raising is achieved by all crew members obtaining sponsorship. Boats, paddles, buoyancy aids and instruction are provided by the organisers who are professional event organisers.
No previous experience is necessary and it is open to all, subject to a minimum age of 16 and being able to swim 50 yards in light clothing.
Fancy dress makes it more fun so prizes are awarded to the winners of the best fancy dress as well as the winners and those who raise the most sponsorship.
In addition to having great fun and raising money for good causes, the event can provide companies, other groups and organisations with an opportunity for team building.
